how to find the perfect photographer
If you’ve been looking for a photographer, you’ve probably realized that there are SO MANY THINGS to think about. Like how much photographers charge, where they live, when they’re available, what they create and how they make you feel.
I know it can be overwhelming, especially if you’ve never hired a professional photographer before, and I’m here to help you in your search with my top 5 tips on finding the perfect photographer for you!
tip no. 1
figure out what you want
If you don’t know what kind of photography you like, you might accidentally hire someone who doesn’t actually create the kind of images you want.
Are you looking for photos that are bright and light or dark and shadowy? Do you like movement and blur or do you want perfect, sharp focus? Are you more into candid and natural images or do you love dramatic and creative posing? Do you like photos that are created indoors or outdoors? Do you want makeup and/or styling services? Do you want to create in a studio? Do you have a strict budget?
Figuring out what you DO and DON’T like will help you find a photographer who CAN and WILL create photos that you’ll love for the rest of your life.

tip no. 2
low prices can be a red flag
Photographers are expensive for a reason! The equipment alone costs thousands of dollars and learning how to use that equipment takes thousands of hours. Gorgeous locations usually require rentals or special permits, too.
Experienced artists know that they can only create beautiful and meaningful work when they have what they need (like a roof over their heads and food in their bellies), so they need to charge what they're worth to keep creating their art.
Big concepts require a lot of time, planning and sometimes crew. Simple concepts often require less time, not as much planning, and usually just a photographer. Just something to keep in mind!
Note: some photographers (like me!) have programs in place to help cover session costs for folks from marginalized and/or under-represented communities who can't otherwise access photography services for financial reasons. If you need or can offer financial assistance, talk to your photographer about it as soon as you can!

tip no. 3
look for someone whose vibe matches your personality
The best portraits happen when you’re feeling relaxed and yourself, so you’re looking for a photographer who you feel comfortable around.
If you’re a person of few words, you might feel more yourself around a quiet artist; if you’re talkative and bubbly, you’ll likely need a photographer who matches your energy.
Communication will feel way more natural and you’ll get photos that feel authentically you!

tip no. 4
check out their portfolio
Instagram lets you see a photographer’s work, but check if they post lookbooks or galleries from past sessions on their website.
You’ll get a better understanding of the photographer’s style, what they deliver to their clients, and what type of clients they typically work with.
tip no. 5
ask questions and be up front
Now that you know what you’re looking for, communicate your goals with your potential photographer BEFORE you hire them. Tell them what kind of photos you like and how you want to feel when you get your photos back.
If there are any photos that stand out to you from Instagram, Pinterest or the photographer’s portfolio, share it with them and tell them what you like about those specific images!
When your photographer understands what you’re inspired by, they’re able to include your thoughts and feelings into their creative process and give you the kind of portraits that you want.
now it's time to reach out to your photographer!
I hope these little tips help you with your search.
